If you’re not satisfied with your smile, you may wonder if you need to spend time and money on orthodontic treatment or whether you can more easily achieve a smile you’re proud of.

With teeth covers, you can restore your teeth, cover up damaged or stained teeth, and enjoy a picture-perfect smile.

In this post, we go over eight types of cosmetic teeth covers, from temporary teeth to more permanent fixes, and help you make the best choice for your smile makeover.

Which Type of Tooth Cover Is Right for You?

You can choose from many different types of tooth replacements. The right type for you depends on both the kind of issue you’re dealing with and the severity of it.

If your teeth have cracks, gaps, discoloration, or stains, a treatment like dental veneers or crowns can conceal or fix the issue. But keep in mind that cosmetic tooth treatments aren’t always covered by insurance, especially if they’re considered cosmetic rather than medically necessary.

If you have missing teeth, broken teeth, or need to have your natural teeth removed because of a severe dental issue, you can get a treatment like dental implants or dentures. These might be partly covered by your insurance.

Before you make your decision to get any dental treatment done, however, assess the cost of treatment and check your insurance policy. Also, consider if you want to visit a dental care provider and how much discomfort you can tolerate.

If you have a severe oral health issue, it probably warrants a visit to the dentist before considering any other treatments. But if your teeth and gums are in good shape, at-home treatments, like snap-on veneers from Shiny Smile Veneers, can be very effective at helping cover lost, damaged, or discolored teeth.

Teeth Covers for Bad Teeth

If you’re struggling with your smile, you can address it by selecting from several cosmetic teeth treatment options. The following sections give you an overview of some popular types of tooth covers.

1. Snap-On Veneers

As the name suggests, snap-on veneers are designed to snap onto and cover your teeth to give you that perfect smile. Unlike traditional veneers, they are affordable and removable.

If you’re looking to save money, one option is the snap-on veneers from Shiny Smile Veneers.

To get your pair of veneers, you first create impressions of your teeth at home using an impression kit and mail these in. You’ll receive your custom veneers two to five weeks later, depending on the postage option you choose.

They’re often voted one of the best snap-on veneer brands, and at the price of $570, they’re the most affordable veneer option. With regular use, your snap-on smile may last one to five years (or potentially even longer, depending on your oral hygiene and other factors). There’s no need to visit a dentist, take anesthetic, or experience any discomfort.

2. Traditional Veneers

Traditional veneers are made from thin shells of composite materials or porcelain. They are designed to cover the visible surfaces of stained, misshapen, damaged, or chipped teeth. They’re especially popular for covering the front teeth.

Traditional veneers are an excellent solution for helping you achieve your desired look. The thin shells of porcelain or composite material stick to your teeth snugly, giving them a near-perfect appearance.

However, they require the removal of some of your natural enamel, and the procedure is not reversible.

Porcelain veneers cost approximately $925 to $2,500 per tooth, while composite veneers cost approximately $250 to $1,500 per tooth.

Though they’re more expensive, porcelain veneers typically last up to 10 years or longer (some studies show they may last up to 20 years) and composite veneers typically last up to 5 years or longer.

3. Dental Crowns

Unlike veneers, which only cover the front of a tooth, dental crowns cover the entire tooth.

With dental crowns, each tooth needs to get ground down or filed to prepare for the crowns’ placement. If your teeth are decayed, the dentist may remove the damaged part before making the crown. In such cases, the tooth may need to be built up to provide sufficient support for the crown.

The five main types of dental crowns are:

  • Metal (such as gold)
  • Porcelain
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Ceramic
  • Resin

Each of these types of crowns has its advantages and disadvantages. The cost of installing each is also different. For example, gold crowns are generally costlier than porcelain ones. In cases where a core build-up is necessary to guarantee the tooth’s structural integrity when installing a crown, the overall cost is typically higher.

Often, dentists perform minor gum surgery to guarantee better aesthetics once a tooth crown is in place. In the worst-case scenario, a root canal may be required, which could easily double the cost of installing a tooth crown.

On average, dental crowns last between 5 and 15 years, and cost $800 to $1,500 each. Both cost and longevity depend on the material used in the treatment. Therefore, it may make financial sense to consider alternatives to crowns.

4. Dental Onlays

Dental onlays are similar to dental crowns, but slightly less aggressive. They fit over the tooth’s surface and typically don’t require a significant part of your tooth to be ground down or removed. They can be made from porcelain, composite, resin, or gold. An onlay might be a good option if you have cavities or damage that a filling can’t fix but don’t want to remove the enamel needed to fit a crown.

Onlays usually cost $650 to $1,200 per tooth, and usually last as long as dental crowns, between 5 and 15 years.

Teeth Covers for Missing Teeth

Having missing teeth or gaps in your smile can make anyone feel self-conscious. But these teeth replacements can help you rediscover your confident smile.

1. Complete Dentures

If you have a lot of missing teeth, a set of full dentures can replace an entire arch along your upper or lower jaw. You need to have lost all of your teeth, or have your teeth removed, for dentures to attach to your jaw or gums. They need to be kept in place with adhesive and taken out before you go to bed at night.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dentures should be re-evaluated after five years of use, and may need to be relined every one to two years to ensure a comfortable fit.

Full dentures usually cost up to $3,500 without dental insurance, but they’re often partly or fully covered by insurance.

Depending on your needs and budget, you can also get more permanent dentures. The two main types are:

  • Implant-supported dentures, where the denture teeth are attached to implants that can only be removed by a dentist.
  • Implant-retained dentures, which are attached to implants, but you can snap them in and out.

2. Partial Dentures

If you have just a few missing teeth and don’t need full dentures, partial dentures can help fill in those areas. They attach using clasps that hook around your other natural teeth and gums.

Similar to full dentures, partial dentures usually need to be re-evaluated after five years. They usually cost $500 to $1,500, but many dental insurance policies will cover some or all of the cost.

3. Dental Bridges

A dental bridge can also fill a gap caused by missing teeth. It uses a false tooth that attaches to crowns on either side of the gap.

To get a bridge, you need to have healthy teeth on either side of the missing ones. Dental bridges don’t require surgery, but do require a visit to a dentist, and you may experience some discomfort as you get fitted.

Dental bridges can cost $700 to $1,500 per missing tooth, so it may cost up to $4,500 to replace several. Bridges typically last five to seven years, and may last over ten years with good oral hygiene.

4. Dental Implants

If you have damaged or lost teeth, dental implants may be an excellent solution for you.

Typically, the process entails replacing the tooth roots with screw-like metallic posts. The damaged or missing teeth may also get replaced with crowns that look and function like your real teeth.

Dental implant surgery is the ideal option when a deficit of natural teeth roots prevents bridgework tooth replacements or denture building.

With proper dental care, implants can last a lifetime — they don’t typically require additional or special care. On average, the cost ranges from $3,000 to $4,500 per tooth. Replacing all or most of your teeth as an alternative to dentures could cost up to $60,000.
